The History of San Clemente

San Clemente is ideally located right in between Los Angeles and San Diego. The city spans 15 square miles of scenic foothills and pristine coastline and is lovingly referred to as the Spanish Village by the Sea. At first glance the Spanish tile roofs and white stucco walls against the blue waters of the Pacific are reminiscent of the Greek Isles, just as Ole Hanson envisioned when he founded the town in 1925.
In 1969, an event occurred which accelerated the growth and reputation of San Clemente. In that year former President Nixon purchased a Spanish mansion in the southern part of town that was built by Hamilton Cotton in 1927. This "Western White House" became the site of numerous historical meetings.
